Details
Bhutan Tour from Bagdogra is a road journey into the Himalayan kingdom, with the high point being a day across Dochula Pass to the valley of Punakha. You cross the border at Phuentsholing, spend two nights in Thimphu, then continue to Paro before heading home by the same route. Stays are in 2 and 3-star hotels with breakfast and dinner, and a private Ertiga, a guide and Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee are all covered. It suits families, couples and friends who want mountain passes, river valleys and old fortress monasteries in a short trip. Expect long drives on the first and last days, and plan your documents ahead, because Aadhaar is not accepted at the border.
You are met at Bagdogra Airport or NJP and driven to the Indian side of the border. At the Pedestrian Terminal in Phuentsholing, complete immigration and receive your entry permit. Check in, rest, and stroll through the local market in the evening. Altitude is about 293 m.
Punakha is one of Bhutan’s most scenic valleys, and the day trip over Dochula Pass is often the highlight of a short visit. A Thimphu and Paro only route misses it.
The sample quote uses Arya Jorden (2-star) in Phuentsholing, Hotel Park in Thimphu and Hotel Gakyidiana in Paro, all 3-star except the first. Rooms are subject to availability, and equal-category hotels may be substituted.
Adults need an original Voter ID or a passport valid for at least 6 months. Children under 18 need an original English birth certificate. Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are not accepted.
Phuentsholing to Thimphu takes about 6 hours. Thimphu to Punakha and back is a full day trip, and Thimphu to Paro takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Hill roads can slow down in rain or fog.
March to May and September to November are clearest. Dochula Pass can be cold and foggy in winter, and monsoon months (June to August) bring rain and landslide risk.
