Sikkim is a small Himalayan state shaped by its Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali communities, ranging from the slopes of Kanchenjunga to glacial lakes and monastery towns.

History
Sikkim was an independent Buddhist kingdom under the Chogyal dynasty from 1642. It became a protectorate of British India in the 19th century and continued as an autonomous monarchy under Indian protection after independence, before a 1975 referendum brought it into the Indian Union as its 22nd state.
Natural Beauty
Sikkim is home to Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, alongside glacial lakes like Tsomgo, rhododendron forests and habitats for the red panda and Himalayan blue sheep.
Tourism and Economy
Tourism underpins much of Sikkim's economy. It's India's first fully organic state, and both adventure tourism (trekking, river rafting, mountain biking) and cultural tourism draw steady numbers of visitors, supported by a growing network of homestays and hotels.
