- North Sikkim reopened (September 2026). Permits for Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake resumed on 11 September 2026, online and offline, after the Lachen road reopened at Taram Chu. (Live Traveller, 11 Sep 2026)
- 4 pm Toong rule. A Mangan district order of 10 September 2026 says tourist and light vehicles must cross the Toong check post by 4 pm, in both directions, to avoid night driving. We plan departures around it. (Live Traveller)
- Permits and self-drive. Permits are mandatory for North Sikkim and self-drive is not allowed. Yumthang and Zero Point are open but depend on weather. Keep a buffer day. (SetMyTrip, updated 1 Sep 2026)
- New permit system (reported). A tour operator's blog dated 19 August 2026 reports a plan for a single online permit portal from 1 October 2026, with per-vehicle fees, filing by 3 pm the day before, and filing only by registered agencies. The source says these were not final and that the Chief Minister had asked for a review. Ask us for the current status before you travel. (We Care Holidays, 19 Aug 2026)
- Busy season. Sikkim recorded about 1.06 million tourists between January and May 2026, of which 97% were domestic. Book hotels early for October to December. (EastMojo, 3 Jul 2026)
- No visa for Indians. Indian nationals need an entry permit, which can be applied for online or collected at Phuentsholing or Paro Airport, with a passport or Voter ID. Travel to Punakha, Bumthang and other places beyond Thimphu and Paro needs a route permit. (Himalayan Harmony, 20 Apr 2026)
- SDF. The Sustainable Development Fee for Indian visitors is ₹1,200 per person per night. This source says children aged 6 to 12 pay half and under-6s are exempt. Our package pages say 5 to 12, so we confirm the child rate at booking. (Himalayan Harmony)
- Guide and insurance. A licensed Bhutanese guide is required, and this operator reports that travel insurance is mandatory as of 2026. We recommend insurance either way. Please confirm with official Bhutan channels before travel. (Himalayan Harmony)
- Flights. Direct flights run to Port Blair from Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata. Airfare is not included in our packages. (HappyFares 2026 guide)
- Ferries. Private ferries (Makruzz, Green Ocean, Nautika) take about 1.5 to 2 hours from Port Blair to Havelock and cost ₹1,200 to ₹2,500. Government ferries are cheaper but take 3 to 4 hours. December and January slots can sell out 30 to 45 days ahead, so book early. (HappyFares)
- Permits. Indian citizens don't need a permit for Port Blair, Havelock or Neil Island. (HappyFares)
- Good to know. Radhanagar Beach has no food shacks, so carry water and snacks. Book the Cellular Jail sound-and-light show ahead in season. Keep at least a 4-hour gap between a ferry and a flight. (HappyFares)
- Tourist spots reopened (February 2026). In February 2026, the Lieutenant Governor ordered 14 tourist spots reopened after a security review, including Doodhpathri, Yousmarg, Thajwas Glacier (Sonamarg), Peer Ki Gali and the Tulip Garden in Srinagar. Gurez, Athwatoo, Bangus and Ramkund were to reopen after snow clearance. This followed the closure of nearly 50 destinations after the April 2025 Baisaran attack. (Outlook Traveller, 19 Feb 2026)
- Pahalgam and Gulmarg. A tour operator's March 2026 guide says Pahalgam (Betaab and Aru valleys) has reopened with extra security patrols, and that Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Dal Lake houseboats and the Gulmarg gondola are running. It doesn't say Baisaran has reopened, and it is promotional, so confirm with us. (Summit Routes)

Sikkim and Darjeeling: March to May, October to November. Bhutan: March to May, September to November. Andaman: October to May. Kashmir: April to October. See best time to visit.
Documents Needed
- Adults: a valid photo ID (Voter ID, passport or driving licence). PAN and Aadhaar are not accepted for adults on our packages. For Bhutan, carry a Voter ID or a passport valid for 6 months.
- Children under 18: Aadhaar or a birth certificate (an original English birth certificate for Bhutan).
- Photos: four passport-size photos per person.
- Arunachal Pradesh: an Inner Line Permit, which we arrange for package guests.
