From Lachen to Gurudongmar: A Journey Through the Cold Desert of Sikkim

By Tripjyada Editorial · 26 September 2026

Some journeys take you from one place to another, and then some journeys quietly transform the way you understand travel itself. The road from Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake is one such experience. It isn’t loud or dramatic; it’s raw, silent, and deeply moving. As you leave the small mountain village of Lachen behind, the landscape slowly sheds its greenery and opens into a vast, high-altitude desert. The air grows thinner, the colours turn muted, and conversations naturally fall silent.

If you’re planning a North Sikkim trip, don’t treat this route as just another sightseeing drive. Give it time. Travel slowly, respect the altitude, and listen to your body. Carrying warm clothes and responsible travel are essential here, not just for safety, but to truly immerse yourself in the experience.
